Are stocks high risk?
Over many decades, the investment that has provided the highest average rate of return has been stocks. But there are no guarantees of profits when you buy stock, which makes stock one of the most risky investments.
Stocks offer an opportunity for higher long-term returns compared with bonds but come with greater risk. Bonds are generally more stable than stocks but have provided lower long-term returns.

Stocks are much more variable (or volatile) because they depend on the performance of the company. Thus, they are much riskier than bonds. When you buy a stock, it is hard to estimate what return you will receive over time (if any). Nonetheless, the greater the risk, the greater the return.
Investments with higher expected returns (and higher volatility), like stocks, tend to be riskier than a more conservative portfolio that is made up of less volatile investments, like bonds and cash. However, even the most conservative portfolio can experience short-term losses due to ever-changing market conditions.
Penny stocks are also found alongside micro-cap stocks, but this group is characterized by incredibly low share prices instead of low market values. These kinds of investments are incredibly risky for two reasons. The first is the potential for manipulation, as with all other kinds of micro-cap stocks.
One of the biggest risks of stock investing is losing your initial deposit and not having the funds you need to manage an emergency. Stocks are also somewhat illiquid, which means your invested funds are not readily available since you would have to sell before withdrawing them.

For long term investors, stocks have been less "risky" than bonds if risk is measured with terminal wealth in mind.

Most sources cite a low-risk portfolio as being made up of 15-40% equities. Medium risk ranges from 40-60%. High risk is generally from 70% upwards. In all cases, the remainder of the portfolio is made up of lower-risk asset classes such as bonds, money market funds, property funds and cash.
